Home Made Energy Guide
Hello all,
Welcome to the “Home Made Energy Guide”. It is my hope that this website helps people conserve energy, lower their power bills, and discover new ways to generate their own electricity.
With an economy that has seen better days, it is very desirable to lower ones energy bills. Although there are many ways to go about doing this, finding a method for generating your own power probably has the largest impact. This can be achieved through a variety of different methods, including constructing your own solar panels or wind generators.
Before we get into discussing forms of generating power, here is a list of simple things the average person can do to help reduce their energy costs at home:
Take shorter showers – the heating of water for showers has a large impact on energy bills. To reduce this portion of a bill, some simple steps to follow include:
- take shorter showers
- install shower heads that do not pass as much water (low flow)
- make sure that your water heater is properly insulated
Turn off the lights – incandescent bulbs take a lot of power to turn on and keep turned on. Whenever you are finished using a light, make sure to turn it off. This can be applied to other household electric items such as appliances or computers.
- use compact fluorescent bulbs instead of incandescent
- turn off lights when leaving a room, or when there is sufficient amount of daylight
- unplug devices that are always using electricity, such as cell phone chargers or computers. A startling fact is that on average, 75% of electricity consumed by home appliances is when they are turned off.
- use a “smart” power strip to regulate the flow of electricity to certain items
Regulate the thermostat – during the winter months, heating a home accounts for a large percentage of your energy bill. A few simple steps to keeping your home warm while maintaining a low energy bill:
- lower the thermostat setting when no one is home, or at night
- use curtains to insulate windows in your home
- wear warm clothes such as sweaters inside
- use a digital thermostat that is more efficient and has a more precise control over the temperature
Following these easy steps can make a difference on monthly energy bills, and also helps the environment by maintaining a low amount of carbon emissions.
This webpage features many ideas on not only conserving home energy, but generating your own. It is a lot simpler that most people think, and supplies can be found at most local hardware stores to build your own solar panels or wind turbines (or both!). In addition to presenting my own ideas and thoughts on the topic, I have also compiled and reviewed some of the most popular internet guides to building devices that generate electricity for your home.
